Build your own DIY Writing Desk with this tutorial!

Towards the terminate of last year, I built several dissimilar types, sizes, and styles of desks, only I never built one quite like this.

It's a pretty basic build—nada super fancy–but it's squeamish because unlike my other desk designs, this one has a pretty big work surface and can exist used as a writing desk-bound or even every bit a craft or dining tabular array (with or without drawers!).

I actually congenital this for my Dad's part to apply when he meets with clients and customers and the large surface will be nice to lay out design ideas and look through portfolios.

I built this DIY writing desk-bound using birch plywood and pine wood.  My parents and I didn't care to make this more difficult or expensive than it needed to be, so we didn't mind using cheap wood.

For this DIY Writing Desk, You Volition Need:

• (3) 2x4x8 boards
• (2) sheets ¾″ plywood
• (½) sheet ¼″ plywood
• (3) 1x2x8 boards
• ¾″ square dowels (nearly 16 ft)
• Cove molding
• Half round molding
• Border banding
• Circular Saw
• Miter Saw
• Drill
• Nail Gun
• Pocket hole jig
• 1 ¼″ pocket hole screws
• Wood Glue
• Table saw (optional)
• (3) pair xvi″ drawer slides

Pace 1: Assemble Writing Desk-bound Legs

To get started, I needed to glue up the posts to use for the legs.  I laminated two pieces of 2×4 together to make each leg. (Yous could also utilise 4x4s instead.)

Earlier gluing them together, I trimmed them down to their rough length (nigh 32″) on the miter saw and cut virtually ⅛" off each edge to foursquare them up on the tabular array saw.

Then, I glued two together for each of the 4 desk legs.

One time the glue dried, I trimmed some other ⅛" off each edge to clean upward the gum joints and also requite me four posts 3" 10 3" overall.

Then, I trimmed these leg posts down to thirty" on the miter saw.

As an optional pace, I added a taper to the ends of the legs. To do this, I adapted my miter saw miter angle to 60 degrees and cutting two sides and then they tapered to the center of the leg like shown here.

I did that for all four posts, then ready them to the side.

Stride 2: Gather Writing Desk Frame

Now that the legs were fix, I needed to get the desk-bound aprons prepare to brainstorm assembling the frame of the desk.

I used ¾″ plywood ripped to 6" wide for the side and dorsum apron. (FYI–the "aprons" are basically simply the panels between the legs.) For more information on cut plywood, check out this postal service.

I used my pocket hole jig to drill ¾″ pocket holes into the ends of the aprons and began assembling the ii sides using one ¼″ pocket hole screws.

I was adding some trim to the desk in a after step, then I installed the aprons ¾" inset from the outside edge of the legs.  That way, when I add the trim later, it'll exist flush to the outside.

Once the two sides were together, I added the back apron the aforementioned fashion—¾" inset from the outside edge of the legs.

Now, since I was adding drawers to the forepart side, I didn't install an apron here.  Instead, I ripped two strips of ¾" plywood to iii" wide and installed with pocket holes and screws.

The top slice was added flush to the top of the legs, simply the bottom piece should be installed so that in that location is iv ½″ gap betwixt them.

I edge banded the front edge of these pieces with atomic number 26 on edge banding as they will exist showing in the finished project.

Pace 3: Install Drawer Box Bracing into Desk Frame

Once the main frame was together, I began calculation the bracing for the drawer slides and drawers.

I used ¾″ plywood for all of these bracing pieces (but yous could use 1x2s on the left and right pieces if you wanted) along the top and installed them using ¾″ pocket holes and 1 ¼″ pocket pigsty screws.

Afterwards the top bracing was attached, I added the bracing inside the desk-bound.

I used bit plywood for this part besides—the width of the pieces on the far left and far right aren't too important hither–they just need to be broad plenty to mount a drawer slide onto.

I used pocket holes and screws to attach these two braces so they are mounted affluent to the inside of the legs similar shown here.

But the center two pieces do demand to be ripped to the exact width that the front end pieces are apart—in this case, it'due south 4 ½".

I evenly spaced the two pieces in the middle and attached the dorsum side to the back frock.  The forepart of these pieces should be i ½" inset from the forepart border of the frame.

Once I ensured they were evenly spaced from the back to the front, I clamped in place and used some woods screws to secure the front to the frame pieces and added a couple along the elevation as well.

Pace 4: Add Drawer Slides and Drawers to Desk

Now that the bracing is in place, it'south time to add the slides.  I installed iii pair of 16" brawl bearing drawer slides onto these braces keeping them 1 ½" inset from the forepart edge of the desk.

Once the slides were in, it was fourth dimension to build and install the boxes.

I went to my flake plywood pile and dug out some pieces to use for the drawers.  I ripped them downward to about iv" wide, cut a dado along the bottom, trimmed them to length, and cutting some ¼" plywood bottoms to fit inside.

Then, I assembled the boxes using pocket holes and screws.

Step 5: Add DIY Writing Desk Superlative

Next, I cut the tiptop from a sheet of ¾" plywood.  I used my Kreg cutting guides and round saw for this, but you could also but clamp a directly edge if y'all don't want to use the guides.

Before attaching the pinnacle, I applied iron on border banding to cover the plywood edges, and sanded information technology well.

I placed the acme upside down on the ground and flipped the desk-bound over on top of information technology.

I checked all the corners to make certain I got it expert and centered, then used woods screws to secure the acme in several places through the top supports.

You will need to pull the drawers out a little to access the pinnacle support at the front end to screw through.

Step vi: Add Trim Detail (OPTIONAL)

At present, all the trim I added here is optional, but I do recall it adds a little extra visual interest and makes it wait nice.

First, I cut to fit 1×two boards to glue and nail along the top and lesser edges of the sides and back of the desk-bound (shown in majestic beneath).

Then, I lined (glued and nailed in place) the inside of these frames with cove molding cut to fit on the sides and dorsum (shown in yellow higher up).

And finally, I added some half round molding around the bottom border all the way around.

I actually intended on adding more than cove molding along the top edge (shown higher up) where the desk meets the top, but I ran out and didn't go into boondocks for more haha.  Then if you wanted to add some this, I think it would wait prissy.

I puttied all the joints and nail holes on this trim and sanded it well.

Step seven: Install Drawer Fronts

And the last part is adding the drawer fronts.  Even though the forepart was drawers and the sides and back were solid, I wanted them to friction match.

So for the drawer fronts, I cut ¾" plywood the size the fronts needed to be and added some trim on top.

I cut square ¾" square dowels to frame the edges and glued and nailed them on top.  Then, merely like with the sides and dorsum of the desk, I lined the within with cove molding.  Below you lot tin can come across the blue back piece is the plywood, the pink is the ¾″ square dowels, and the regal is cove molding.

Then, I spaced them out on each drawer with ⅛" gap around the edges and screwed them in identify with wood screws from the inside of each drawer.

To terminate information technology off, I gave it a few coats of clear poly (I used Minwax Helmsman Water Based in Semi Gloss) and some uncomplicated black handles.

I actually had wanted to pigment this DIY writing desk since the woods colors didn't match exactly, but my mom and dad actually wanted to leave it natural…and the client is e'er right haha.

I exercise like the light colored forest, merely I wish I had picked 2x4s that were a petty less…pinkish. Oh well…I tin can always paint it later if they alter their mind 🙂

I'm really happy with how this projection turned out and call back it would brand a overnice desk, but likewise a nice craft table, or you lot could even put some casters on it and brand a rolling kitchen island besides.
